Job Description

Position Type: Transportation/Mechanic Date Posted: 10/7/2024 Location: Transportation Department Date Available: 2024-2025 School Year Closing Date: Open Until Filled TITLE: Bus Mechanic II. QUALIFICATIONS: High school education or equivalent. Three to five years mechanical experience. Documented heavy duty brake systems. Prefer A.S.E. certified in diesel engines, electrical, steering, suspension, and drive train. Commercial driver's license with a BP endorsement. Meet current district vehicle insurance qualifications for driving coverage. Current requirement is "less than 3 traffic violations within the last 3 years." Heavy duty truck mechanical repair experience or school bus. Knowledge of heavy duty hydraulic and air brake systems. Ability to use two-way radio system for communication purposes. Ability to maintain a positive work environment Excellent organizational skills Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Able to work under deadlines REPORTS TO: Building Director of Transportation.

IV. NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE JOB:

To represent Jefferson County School District Transportation Department in the daily maintenance of school buses and other assigned vehicles. To assure the mission and philosophy of the district and department are supported throughout the position's area of responsibility. Follow appropriate safety regulations in all areas of the job responsibility. V. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains the State of Idaho commercial driver's license with Air Brake, Passenger, and School Bus endorsements and follows its requirements. Meets current district vehicle insurance qualifications for driving coverage. Current requirement is "less than 3 moving violation in 3 years." Maintains current National Department of Transportation physical. Climbs inside of, on top of, and under all assigned vehicles. Completes 60 day and Annual School Bus Inspections. Completes preventive maintenance's and lubrications as assigned. Completes all paperwork and records keeping associated with repairs. Troubleshoots and repairs school bus components, gas and diesel engines, 12-24 volt electrical systems, hydraulic and air brake systems, hydraulic power steering systems, tires, and wheels. Makes emergency service calls outside of shop area. Performs engine tune-ups. Washes and scrubs work area floors with soap and water. Answers telephone after office hours and relays messages to proper personnel. Answers two-way radio to communicate with drivers. As a safety standard, employee must comply with and pass drug and alcohol testing requirements as required. Drives bus on routes as needed. Provide own tools of the trade. Maintains current tool inventory if district provided. Report any missing, unsafe or damaged tools and equipment. Is consistently at work and on time; Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent; Follows instructions, responds to management direction. Welds and cuts metal. Performs minor body repairs. Removes snow around Bus Garage, Warehouse, and Educational Services Center. Fuels buses and checks fluid levels as needed. Performs after hour call-outs due to emergency situations.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

This is an "at will" position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time, or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The "employment at will" policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 251.

Performance of this position will be evaluated by the Director of Transportation.

Ability to lift loads up to 120 pounds occasionally such as 11R22.5 tires mounted on rims. Ability to stoop, bend over, and work from sitting or kneeling position for 15-20 minutes at a time. Ability to work in confined areas such as under seats and engine compartments. Ability to lay on creeper and work with arms and hands above head. ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: Ability to work in all weather conditions to include hot, cold, extremely cold, wet, rainy, and dusty, whether inside shop or outside of shop area. Noisy conditions caused from engines running and impact tools. Fumes from gasoline or diesel engines as they are moved in and out of shop area. Cleaning solvents, aerosol sprays, diesel, and gasoline. Frequent exposure to various supplies containing hazardous materials or chemicals. Jefferson School District 251
