General responsibilities: The University of Minnesota publishes high-quality trade, regional, and academic books. The Publishing Intern will work on projects from every department at the Press: editorial (formatting manuscripts, photo research and permissions, maintaining editorial files); book production (proofreading); marketing, sales, and publicity (market research, copywriting, pitching media coverage); business office (data entry, document scanning/compiling, records maintenance); journals; and the test division. Duties 25% EDITORIAL WORK: Format manuscripts for production and copyediting, prepare materials for various editorial/Press meetings, compile art and/or text permission logs, tag manuscripts, and order books for authors. 25% MARKETING WORK: Process media coverage, conduct market research, process review copy requests, assist with galley mailings, copy/pitch writing, assist with media research and outreach, staff local book events, conduct course adoption research, assist with exhibits coordination/packing, create supplementary marketing materials, assist with adding copy to the website. 20% BUSINESS OFFICE WORK: Data entry and document scanning, compiling PDFs to pay invoices, maintain supplier records, compile data from sales reports, update database records, scan contracts, royalty statements, and other documents. 20% PRODUCTON WORK: Proofreading, index and back cover copy editing, participate in the cover design process. 5% JOURNALS WORK: Tag manuscripts before copyediting, proofreading, and assist with entering subscription information. 5% TEST DIVISION WORK: Assist in monitoring the test division inbox and respond to general inquiries, ordering author copies. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Qualifications: HS degree or equivalent PREFERRED SELECTION CRITERIA: * Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and Google Drive * Strong organizational skills * Attention to detail and accuracy * Thoroughness and proactive with follow-up * Timeliness in performing work and attention to deadlines * Strong written communication skills About the Department The University of Minnesota Press, a ground-breaking nonprofit scholarly publisher located in downtown Minneapolis, seeks a highly motivated person with an interest in book publishing to work as a publishing intern for Spring Semester 2025, from January through May 2025.
