SUMMARY

The Elevator Operator is responsible for receiving and loading out grain and ensuring that grain is kept in good condition through the quality controls put in place by the Cooperative. This also includes maintenance of facilities and equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(Includes the following and other duties may be assigned.)

Responsible for:

  • Following directions established for operations of the facilities and equipment in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the Location Manager or Regional Operations Director.
  • Receiving, loading out, and storing customers’ grain. Grain will be segregated by grain type and condition and kept in same condition as when placed in elevator.
  • Performing preventable maintenance on equipment including but not limited to: grain elevator repair, lubricating legs, U-troughs, check belts on legs, power drives and grain dryer.
  • Housekeeping of elevator facility and location grounds. This includes legs, boots, head house and maintaining accurate records.
  • Reading and recording temperature monitors weekly.
  • Monitoring inventory of grain and other products.
  • Keeping up to date on government and safety regulations. Attends educational, safety, and informational meetings as required.
  • Having the ability to operate scale software.
  • Seeking opportunities to increase sales and improve efficiencies in operations of the location.
  • Adhering to the company credit policy.
  • Effectively communicating by verbal and written means with customers, employees, and management.
  • Adherence to safety policies and providing safety leadership.
  • Promoting and adhering to the company Core Values of honesty, integrity & teamwork.
  • Possessing excellent organizational skills, attentive to detail and accuracy, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Securing facilities and equipment when closing.
  • Promptly and regularly reporting to work and work overtime hours as needed.
  • Presenting a clean and professional appearance.
  • Employee is required to perform all other duties as directed.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Must have a high school diploma or previous experience related to grain, feed, fertilizer, chemicals and/or farms supplies.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with customers or employees of the cooperative.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, and weights.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

Commercial Driver’s License Class B with Haz-Mat and Tanker Endorsements and/or the ability to obtain and maintain. Inspector’s and Weigher’s license and/or the ability to obtain and maintain.

REASONING ABILITY

The ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Able to deal with problems with several concrete variables in standard situations. Must be able to think quickly and perform a mental assessment of workplace hazards, take appropriate precautions, and choose appropriate PPE as dictated by need, regulation and labeling.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and/or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move 65 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 100 pounds. The employee is regularly required to legally operate a grain elevator manlift with the door closed, (300 lb. weight limit), climb stairs, and climb ladders to the top of the elevator (approximately an additional 30’-40’). The employee may occasionally need to climb ladders that may range from 20’ to 180’. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; wet and/or humid condition; extreme cold and extreme heat; toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places; risk of electrical shock and explosives. The noise level in this work environment usually loud (although not believed to exceed the eight-hour threshold for working in or around loud equipment). Employee must understand and implement all related safety policies, procedures and programs for prevention and protection while performing job duties in various work environments.
