Job Description

Overview and Responsibilities:

Saint Marys University of Minnesota is seeking to hire a Director of Access Services on the Winona Campus. The Director of Access Services is responsible for ensuring reasonable and effective academic accommodations that address an individuals unique learning needs are provided to all students University wide. The Director will oversee all aspects of Access Services University wide, including but not limited to, the evaluation of documentation, implementation of appropriate accommodations, as a resource and advocate to faculty and students regarding disability needs, implementing and creating (when necessary) appropriate policies and procedures, and advocating for University wide accessibility. The director will serve as a resource to the University to ensure access to all and foster a University community where disabilities are a valuable aspect of our diverse community.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and coordinate all aspects of disability services for the University (College and Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs - SGPP).
  • Supervise the Access Services staff.
  • Coordinate and interpret confidential documentation to determine reasonable academic accommodations.
  • Coordinate the maintenance of confidential records and data regarding students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with necessary partners (OPM, publishing companies, and faculty) to provide accessible academic content for students.
  • Collaborate with Admissions (College and SGPP) to promote / share services provided through Access Services.
  • Coordinate with Career Services to promote employment opportunities for students with disabilities upon graduation.
  • Oversee implementation, through collaboration with the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), to develop and provide University wide faculty onboarding and continuing development on the needs of students with disabilities (such as training for the use of assistive and educational technology).
  • Oversee training for the use of assistive and educational technology to students University wide.
  • Advocate for students as needed with faculty and mediate conflicts if necessary.
  • Leadership in University wide initiatives supporting Accessibility (such as all video, print, and web materials) and Universal Design Learning (UDL).
  • Oversee and ensure assessment and evaluation of Access Services on an annual basis and implement continuous improvement plans.
  • Oversee and manage Access Services budget.
  • Oversee and coordinate University wide Service Animal and Emotional Support Animal policies and procedures and manage the requests from SGPP students.
  • Coordinate and implement retention efforts within Access Services in support of the University Strategic Plan and utilizing industry best practices.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with relevant state and federal agencies, as well as Access Services Directors and coordinators at other institutions and associations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Essential Skills and Functions

  • Knowledge of ADA and 504 regulations as they relate to students with disabilities and to know the rights and responsibilities of persons with disabilities as well as those of the University.
  • Current knowledge of law, policy, practice, and literature on a variety of disability services in higher education.
  • Ability to interpret psycho-educational diagnostic reports.
  • Knowledge of Assistive Technology to support students with disabilities on campus.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures as they relate to students with disabilities (Service/Emotional Support Animal Policy, classroom recording policy) and testing policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills.
  • Interpersonal skills, with experience developing strong professional relationships and communicating effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong computer skills: solid understanding and use of the Google Suite, Microsoft office products, and general computer applications.
  • SIS and CRM software experience.
  • Must be able to occasionally work evenings and weekends.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships and communications at all levels of the organization.
  • Observes safety guidelines and follows safety procedures established by the university.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively alone and within a team environment.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Masters degree preferred in education, psychology, counseling, learning disabilities, or related fields.
  • 3-5 years of experience required providing academic support services to students with disabilities, preferably at the higher education level.
  • May consider other acceptable equivalent combinations of training and experience.
