Delivers and collects mail on foot or by vehicle within a designated area, under various weather conditions. Maintains professional public relations with customers, requiring familiarity with postal laws, regulations, products, procedures, and local geography. May need to carry mail weighing up to 35 pounds and load or unload containers of up to 70 pounds. Duties and Responsibilities Routes or cases all classes of mail in sequence along an established route. Rearranges and relabels cases as needed. Withdraws mail from distribution cases and prepares it for efficient delivery, including sorting and relaying mail for delivery along the route. Handles undeliverable mail according to established procedures. Delivers mail along a prescribed route, on foot or by vehicle, on a regular schedule, collecting additional mail from relay boxes as needed. Collects mail from street letter boxes and accepts mail from customers; may deliver parcel post or collect mail on certain routes. Uses portable electronic scanners as instructed. Delivers and collects charges on customs, postage-due, and C.O.D. mail, and handles registered and insured mail, obtaining receipts and signing for delivery. Deposits collected mail at the post office upon return from the route. Checks and corrects mailing cards from advertisers with customer information. Provides postal information, change of address cards, and other forms to customers. Reports unusual incidents or conditions related to mail delivery or street letter boxes to supervisors. Proficiently cases mail on assigned routes and collaborates professionally with colleagues. May serve as a substitute carrier, performing clerical duties and passing relevant examinations. Additional duties may include checking establishments for undeliverable mail, delivering stamps and supplies, serving at delivery windows, and registering first-class mail. Driving Requirements Applicants must have a valid state driver’s license, a safe driving record, and at least two years of unsupervised driving experience in the U.S., U.S. possessions, territories, or military installations worldwide.
